Organizer Has High Hopes for Bridge to Breakwater Run

MORE SAN PEDRO

On Sept. 2, hundreds of runners and walkers are expected to race along San Pedro's waterfront in what organizers hope will be the first in an annual event.

The ION® Bridge to the Breakwater race -- a 12K and 5K course -- will start in the shadow of the Vincent Thomas Bridge and hug the harbor coastline down to the break wall.

Organizer Dave Behar said he wanted the race to emulate San Francisco's Bay-to-Breakers Race. That cross-city event brings out competitive runners, casual strollers and festive revelers who dress in full costume to walk the length of the water-to-water course.

In the future, Behar hoped to have runners, skateboarders, bikers, swimmers, boaters and all manner of competitors race from the Vincent Thomas Bridge to the break wall.

However, Behar tempered any expectations for this year's race of rivaling the 100,000 participants who come to the Bay-to-Breakers Race.

"This year is still a dry run," Behar said. "We haven't had a full year to prepare for it or generate publicity for it."

Despite the short notice, Behar said he expected the race to continue to grow in the coming years.

"We're one of only two races in the Los Angeles area over Labor Day weekend," Behar said.
"The other race will be on Monday (Sept. 4) when most people will not want to run, because they'll have work the next day. Our event will be on the Saturday (Sept. 2) before Labor Day."
